Manoj Bharti Gupta is a Delhi-based visual storyteller, photographer, and independent thinker whose work is deeply rooted in realism, socio-political awareness, and human narratives. As the creative force behind MBG Photography, he brings a distinctive perspective shaped by lived experience, self-education, and years of artistic exploration.
Work Statement
The foundation of his work is driven by a profound internal impulse — “Urge to Say.” His photography is not merely visual documentation; it is an expression of questions, observations, and responses to the world around him.
Biography
A largely self-taught individual, Manoj firmly believes that “Self-education is the only education.” Born and raised in Delhi’s Sultanpuri JJ Colony, his early experiences shaped a deep sensitivity toward social realities and human conditions.
He began his education at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya and later attended the University of Delhi. Choosing passion over convention, he left during his second year of graduation to pursue media and storytelling. He subsequently completed a Diploma in Mass Communication from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Delhi.
After spending nearly six years in the media industry, he turned toward freelance photography, dedicating several years to independently developing his artistic voice before completing professional studies in photography.
Over the last decade, his work has evolved into a thoughtful exploration of social, economic, and political realities. His photographs consistently attempt to document and question the structures that influence everyday life.
A significant intellectual influence on his journey has been the renowned writer Harishankar Parsai, whom he considers his ideological father. Parsai’s thought-provoking line:
“जिनको जिनके विकास के लिए नियुक्त किया गया था, उसने उसी के निकास का अवरुद्ध किया।” (“The one appointed for development often becomes the one who obstructs it.”) has deeply influenced Manoj’s worldview—evoking reflection, discomfort, and critical awareness that resonates through his work.

Ongoing Project
Since 2015–16, Manoj has been working on a long-term visual documentation project titled “The Listener”, an ambitious effort that is gradually evolving into India’s first photobook on alternative politics.
